Food Friday Week 2: San Miguel Purefood Tender Juicy

Hi everyone! It's time for another Food Friday!! Woo hoo! Our first week was very successful an everyone loved it! I can't wait to see your comments and replies with this great product. It's the San Miguel Purefood Tender Juicy ordered from Phil-Am Foods (LINK). I had never tried this before but boy was I surprised by this, it really is nothing that I had ever tried before! From reading comments on their Facebook page (LINK) I definitely found out that I had to try this just because of everybody raving about it! Thankfully I was able to and they were able to send me one of them for reviewing. Let's get started!

Woo hoo! I got my package. Frozen products come in a insulated box with ice packs to keep the food nice and cold upon arrival to the destination. Let's see what's inside!

Yay! My San Miguel PurefoodTender Juicy arrived!

I chose to boil my hot dogs and try them out!

It will take about maybe 10-20 minutes for the hot dogs to fully "cook" since they were frozen.

Let's get to tasting and reviews!

My Review
First off let me say that I didn't really know what to expect upon first impression. I was told that these hot dogs are different because of their casing and the meats used. From my picture of the front of the package, it is a turkey and pork mixture. Cool, I don't think I ever had that "combination" before. Alright let's talk about cooking it now. I let mine defrost for a couple of hours and it took about 15 minutes for my water to boil and heat them up (they are fully cooked already) and the package says to keep them frozen so you'd also have to leave them out to defrost for a bit. In the pot of water waiting to be boiled they looked a little funny to me, it almost reminded me of my childhood and play-doh (not meant to be a insult to the product).

Let's face it, hot dogs are not health food, they may not look the most beautiful but we love them because of the taste and the casing (well I do anyways). I also noticed that some of the red dye (possibly from the casing) was in the pot which made me think a little bit less of it but I'm still eager and excited to see how these taste. Alright let's get to tasting these yummy guys!

I cut one of them in half (the pack comes with 10 hot dogs) and you can see that the casing is the one that is actually red. A lot of the color boils off so don't worry, you're not straight up eating 100% dye. I actually really do like the casing, even when boiled there is a crisp almost "crunch" to the hot dog similar to the Nathan's restaurants (which I love!). My personal favorites for hot dogs are from Nathans, Hebrew National, Oscar Mayer and Costco. This one may be a new favorite just because of the casing and the way the turkey/pork mixture tastes. It really is very unique, I never had anything quite like it!

I am not Filipino and had never tried these when I was a kid but I read about so many stories of how this brings back their childhood memories. I don't quite know enough about the culture of the Filipino Brand of hot dogs either, the red dye could be symbolism (similar to the Chinese culture of luck and riches with the color red). Anyways off track, this is an excellent product and you really can't find it in many supermarkets (even some of the Asian markets). I suggest ordering through the Phil-Am Food website, they have a huge variety and their shipping fee is depending on the weight or price of your cart. Overall I really enjoyed this product and am very thankful for this opportunity to share this new food, a bit about culture and the great Phil-Am website to all of my viewers!

  3. That casing really is quite red- I think that would scare me off a little. I'm not sure if I have had specifically Filippino food, but I have definitely tried tons of different Asian foods!

  9. I have never tried Filipino foods before but I don't think that I would like these hot dogs. I have learned recently that the red dye I am allergic to. I'm not a big hot dog fan but when I do eat them I have certain brands that I stick to. Oscar Meyers for me.

  13. Not only have I never tried Filipino foods, I've never even heard of them. We usually eat our hot dogs with some macaroni and cheese. You should give that a try.

  14. I love hot dogs grilled...not so much if they are boiled. My kids won't eat them (weird, huh?) so I don't make them much.

  15. I've never tried Filipino foods that I know of. However, these remind a lot of "Red Hots" that we have here in the States, which are my favorite type of Hot Dog :)

  18. Oh wow, I was not expecting the inside to look like that! I didn't know there was such a thing as Filipino hot dogs. I also haven't had that combination of turkey and pork before. I need to get to Costco and try their hot dogs too. I know my son LOVES THEM!

  19. I've never tried Filipino food before. I seems kind of strange to me because I think of hot dogs as more of an American food. I've had a lot of Asian foods. We have some great Asian restaurants in our area and I love the food.

  20. I have never tried in Filipino foods. However, I have had my share of Asian foods since my kids dad is Asian. I love trying food from different cultures though it is interesting to see how they make food and from the Asian foods I have tried they were all delicious.

  21. I have not tried Filipino food before, but I really like trying out new things. I do purchase things on occasion from the local Asian food shops, especially sweet treats. I bought Green Tea Kit Kats from there...and put them in my stash to try out for when I'm off my current dietary restrictions. When it comes to new foods, I am a visual person, and the red casing is throwing me for a bit of a loop. Also, I always pan-fry my hot dogs and eat with mustard...they never appealed to me when they were boiled.

  22. Ohh...these are interesting!! It is like a hot dog on a hot dog! Lol! I love Nathan's too! They are my favorite. Last year we purchased a hotdog steamer. It has the hotdogs in a drawer below and keeps the buns steamed on top. It is great for parties...off topic! Great review!

  23. I love filipino food. Especially Pancet and Lumpia. This looks like an interesting dish. I'd definitely try it. We love trying new foods in this house :)

  24. I haven't really tried a lot of Filipino food products. I remember eating something, no clue what it was though. When my ex-husband was in the Army, some neighbors brought some to a birthday party. However this does look actually good.
